Van Area Oil and Historical Museum
In 1986 a group of Van Area citizens representing the Van City Council, Van School Board, Union Oil Company, Unocal Pipeline, Fine Arts Club, Rotunda Study Club, Van Chamber of Commerce, Van Volunteer Fire Department and other interested citizens of the community met to contemplate the "Birth" of a museum to preserve some of the history of the community. After various meetings, the Van Area Oil & Historical Museum became a reality on June 30, 1987 when their charter was filed with the State of Texas.
The Museum is located in the "Old Cook Warehouse", a building which the Museum leases from the City of Van. The building was built in 1930 by the Pure Oil Company to house oilfield materials used in the development of the oilfield which had been discovered with the drilling of the Jarman # 1 on October 14, 1929.
